Private investment in social infrastructure, which includes healthcare, education, social housing and other sub-sectors, has declined over the past decade. The healthcare and social housing sub-sectors have seen a particularly sharp fall, which may reverse in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 health crisis.
In the transport sector, the roads, tunnels and bridges sub-sector accounted for about half of private infrastructure investment over the past decade. Investment in other transport sub-sectors was evenly distributed, growing the fastest for heavy rail. A sharp decline can be expected in 2020 given the fall in transport activities related to COVID-19 lockdowns.
