Supporting the G20 to drive an ambitious agenda on sustainable, resilient and inclusive infrastructure through action-oriented programs.
Based in Sydney, Australia and Toronto, Canada the GI Hub team provides data, insights and best practice and works towards creating a common language on infrastructure. Strategic partnership is at the core of what the GI Hub delivers through events, thought leadership and tools. We are the G20’s only dedicated infrastructure entity.
The Global Infrastructure Hub Ltd operates as a not-for-profit organisation, and is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated under Australian law – the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) (Corporations Act). The formal governance organs are the Board and the Audit and Risk Committee, however we also have a Strategic Council which provides guidance to the GI Hub on alignment of its activities with the G20’s priorities and expectations.
The directors are appointed in accordance with the Corporations Act and the GI Hub constitution. The Board is responsible for the operational oversight of the GI Hub, and for the governance requirements of Australian law.
The Board comprises representatives from the Ministries of Finance or Treasuries of the GI Hub’s major funding partners Australia and Canada, plus a representative of the G20 Presidency Troika from the Ministry of Finance or Treasury of the immediate past-presidency country.
In addition, there are two independent directors, chosen for their experience and skills in managing entities of this nature and agreed in consultation with G20 countries.
Australia is currently the Chair of the Board.
In 2015 our Board of Directors established an Audit and Risk Committee to provide assurance and assistance to the Board on our risk, control and compliance framework, and its external accountability responsibilities.
The Committee is directly responsible and accountable to the Board for reviewing the appropriateness of the Board’s:
The Committee is appointed by the Board and currently includes the GI Hub’s two independent directors and KPMG (the GI Hub’s independent auditor).
The Strategic Council sits separately from the Board, and is focused primarily on the alignment of GI Hub strategy and activities with the G20 infrastructure agenda and G20 Presidency priorities.
The Strategic Council was created in 2019 by the GI Hub Board to provide a formal mechanism for interested G20 members to provide meaningful guidance and feedback on the GIH activities at an early stage and without requiring time at formal G20 Finance Track meetings. It is a direct response to the need for the GI Hub to be more closely aligned to the G20 and its priorities, and to improve transparency of its operations.
The Strategic Council currently comprises representatives from 12 G20 member and guest economies, as well as a representative of the Multilateral Development Banks – usually the Chair of the Infrastructure Collaboration Platform. The Board members of the GI Hub also participate in the Strategic Council as observers, to ensure a strong two-way flow of information between the bodies.
Countries represented on the Strategic Council are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom, United States.
As a not-for-profit organisation the GI Hub has received or currently receives funding on a voluntary basis from the following G20 member and non-member countries.
In 2014 the G20 recognised the importance of infrastructure in boosting demand and lifting productivity and growth, establishing the multi-year Global Infrastructure Initiative programme to support public and private investment in quality infrastructure. The Global Infrastructure Hub was created by the G20 to provide dedicated resources to help implement the agenda under the Initiative and deliver on the G20’s objectives.
In 2018, the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors endorsed the extension of the GI Hub’s mandate for a further four years, to the end of 2022. This allows the GI Hub to continue to support the G20’s objectives of increasing the quality and quantity of infrastructure globally, by identifying and bridging gaps, aligning efforts, creating partnerships and promoting shared solutions.
Since 2018, the GI Hub has strengthened its relationship with the G20 through engagement at the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors level, the Finance Deputies level, and through direct participation in the Infrastructure Working Group. We have proactively provided support to the G20 in developing and delivering on the infrastructure agenda, and continue to play an active role in monitoring implementation of major G20 agreed approaches such as the Roadmap to Infrastructure as an Asset Class and the G20 Quality Infrastructure Investment Principles.
In 2019 the GI Hub opened its second office in Toronto, Canada to provide proximity to the private sector, multilateral development banks and international organisation partners, and build up our economics and data capabilities.
The Global Infrastructure Hub is happy to provide information on our tools, reports, data analysis and commentaries, as well as events and corporate matters.
We can arrange interviews with our staff and organise access for journalists, photographers and camera crews at events.
